hooked up three relays, each to its own 9v and flexinol...

but there was very little movement. We tried tightening the flexinol, using lighter gauge piano wire, connecting to bigger scarier batteries, but without much success. Experimented with paper (instead of piano wire) and got a much greater range of movement.

We still have not received the Flexinol yet, so we have focused on the code for this particular prototype with LED lights.

We were attempting to have the LED lights to go on and off at different rates, allowing for outputs going from synchronized to a more chaotic pattern.

Once the Flexinol is arrived, we will swap the circuit with the one from Prototype 4, where we have connected a series of relays with individual outputs and the LEDs to flexinol wire.

With architectural component defined as wall, we proceed to develop the responsive and kinetic components of our goal in producing a living architecture. Wall as a spatial barrier is conventionally static, fixed, dividing and can in turn be programmatically limiting, exclusive in it’s enclosure and mentally/psychologically stifling. Upon first conception we sought to conceive of an invisible spatial barrier, which would allow flexible isolation of small spaces within a larger space. This would be achieved by audio isolation and active cancellation between spaces by creating a ‘curtain wall’ of noise canceling frequencies.

Input:
Audio (collective sounds of congregation; conversation, shuffling, etc)

Processing:
Conversion of input frequency into canceling counter frequency

Output:
Audio, counter frequency sent in direction of collision and resulting in cancellation

These initial terms of agreement could not be aligned with the low-tech nature of the lab and have therefore been subjected to evolution. Wanting to stay true to the architectural component and the ideological impact on space, we substitute key words to help identify a new means to a similar end. ‘Invisible spatial barrier’ becomes ‘ephemeral spatial barrier,’ and the means of dividing stray from active noise canceling to a physical but porous (whether translucent or perforated) member that will divide by means of passive noise canceling and physical properties of impenetrability.

Our new model begins as a free plan room. Within this room there will be sensors (either audio or motion) that will read congregation and a tracked wall will articulate according to programmed spatial accommodation. Ideally the conditions of the room should be flexible and ever changing to the dynamic nature of the room and its activity.

Input:
Audio or motion sensors: a grid will allow different combinations to produce unexpected and stimulating results

Processing:
A realization of spatial activity and an ability to compute combinations of area activities and process the accommodating wall configurations.

Output:
A kinetic curtain wall which will isolate or open space for a polyprogrammatic room.

this week we made the micro controller communicate with the computer using Processing(rather than the computer sending the micro controller information).

using the photo resistor, a series of squares dance on the screen when exposed to light. when covered, the squares stop.

this test set up basic communication and understanding of code.

next week we plan to import data into processing and make the micro controller react (basically opposite of todays video).

if the micro controller can respond to lists of data then we can begin to import live air quality updates.

After our encounter a series of issues with our first prototype (wire not being tight enough, and the calibration of counter force of wire), we have re-calibrated this new prototype, however, we had still encounter some problems of not having any movement once we connected the prototype with the micro-controller, and we have tried to troubleshoot by connecting the prototype straight to battery, and found that it was able to achieve great movement on the flexinol wire. After another series of troubleshooting, we found out that we just needed a new battery..............

Life Speculatrix: an evolutionary physical skin base on local and remote feedback by Nancy Diniz and Cesar Branco

The goal of Life Speculatrix was to design a dynamic membrane with continuously reconfiguring behaviors directed by fitness criteria and dynamic environmental inputs. The inputs for the system include sensors that detect how long visitors stay by the membrane and data gathered by two remote sources: an interface that allows visitors to input whether or not they approve of what they see in the virtual representation of the membrane, as well as randomly selected environmental data from the World Wide Web such as pollution levels and climate features. The processing of the inputs includes a genetic algorithm where the inputs of the users and the environment are the inputs for genetic variation. The system evaluates and evolves the behaviors of the actuators based on what patterns yield greater "empathy", measured by how long people stay near the membrane and how often people positively respond the virtual representation. The membrane consists of levers actuated by Smart Memory Alloys, different types of materials and textiles, sound sources and LED lights.

This collaboration between Alex Haw and Marc Fornes at the AA in London, is both a graceful intervention into the architecture school and a poignant critique of surveillance. The LED network is linked to a building-wide monitoring system that translates the amount – and I believe location – of activity into bursts of light.

While not employing the material actuators which we will be focusing on, I find this project to be exemplary due to its instrumentalization of responsive technologies. Its complex inputs and outputs do not justify the merits of the project, rather they are the method for arriving at a provocative and engaging space.

Parsons Installation

This was an installation at Parsons School of Design. The two LED panels not only respond by recessing as they sense movement when people move toward it, but they also graph the noise level in the computer labs of the facility, giving those who are approaching an indication of the activity level within. The most interesting thing about this project is that when the panels are closed they become obstacles that then force visitors to explore parts of the gallery that might have remained unseen. I think that the ability to steer people is the great potential of this project, and I wish it had been carried out further to become more like moving walls throughout the entire gallery space rather than just a passageway.

i found this proposal by howeler + yoon to be very intriguing. rather than having one component responding to a dynamic environment, each unit works independently allowing the entire form to transform. the units are strung on irregular cables and funnel towards the ground, directing light and rain. the units operate using the reflective material lining the inner surface attracting solar power. i like that the canopy is used as an architecture element occupying the ceiling surface. i think the proposal could incorporate motion or sound tracking, having the ability to morph based on the sounds or actions beneath. maybe it could carry out a set of reactions based off predictions of the weather....

This is really neat. A new take on representing artifacts from the past in a smart interactive way. David Small created the 'Nobel Field' in Norway. It's a museum for all Nobel Prize laureates, (winners).
I am guessing that motion sensors act as the user input. LCD screens then begin to present facts about a specific Nobel Prize laureate. This is a great way to present information to a person. I feel that sometimes a typical 'museum' might feel a bit stale. Rather than having a static, one dimensional form of representing history, David Small has turned a topic into something else. What a great way to capture attention of a passer-by, let them know that their presence matters.

Reconfigurable House

This is an exhibition currently going on at NTT ICC in Tokyo, Japan; titled Reconfigurable House, it uses a series of sensors activated by various "visitor" actions. "Each visitor will be able to use a simple interface to configure the reactions and interactions of the house in a completely different way."

The are several input systems in this installation, they are sound, light, touch, footsteps, phone calls, mp3 players, and the outputs are a series of moving lights, different types of sounds and different pitch, flashing LEDs, and a series of moving contraptions.

One of the interesting aspect of this installation is that if there are no input by visitors, it would go into a series of "day-dream" and "bored" state, which it would begin to exhibition different types of behaviors. The software is programmed by using Processing, and the electronics are controlled by Arduino.

this might be a stretch of relation, due to its lack of electronics, but it has a definite, and interesting, input and output. modeled after blossoming and shedding of pine-cones and their seeds. this developed shirt breathes in response to body temperature so one can dress without having to consider the mid-day changes in weather and temperature. what's really nice about it is it's dynamics, it doesn't just have two positions; open and closed, but will react to small or local 'hot-spots' rather than just behaving on global conditions. check it out
